| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina MARY P. WHITTLE Posted Wednesday, September 14, 2016 6:00 am HARTSVILLE - Mary Maxine Purdy Whittle, beloved wife, mother and friend, died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 11, 2016. Maxine's journey began on May 14, 1921, in Greeley, Nebraska, and ended in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Maxine lived her life, in her own words, "for her family." A kind, quiet and humble soul, she enjoyed reading, music, sewing, faith and family. The daughter of Anna Cecelia Larkin Purdy and Clarence Leroy Purdy, Maxine grew up on the family farm with eight siblings: five sisters and three brothers. After graduating from high school, she worked the lunch counter at the Greeley 5 & 10 store. During World War II, in the first of many moves, Maxine, with her eldest brother Cyril and his wife Deloris, left their family and home to work in an aircraft plant in San Diego, California. After the war, she worked for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp., where she earned the nickname "Mary Sunshine" for her spritely demeanor, big smile, and cheerful attitude. She was also awarded a citation of appreciation for her work there. In San Diego, Maxine met her future husband, Allen David "Whit" Whittle, a Seaman in the U.S. Navy. When Whit was transferred to Alabama, Maxine journeyed to Pascagoula, Mississippi, where they wed on Jan. 10, 1949. The demands of military deployment kept them on the move in the early years of their marriage. In fact, each of their four children was born in a different part of the South: David Allen Whittle, Pensacola, Florida, 1951; Kay Ellen Whittle, Chincoteague, Virginia, 1953; Randy Jay Whittle, Memphis, Tennessee, 1955; and Richard Neal Whittle, Norfolk, Virginia, 1957. While Whit served tours of duty aboard ship and abroad, Maxine kept the family together on the home front. They finally settled in Sumter, where she spent her last 59 years. At heart, she remained a Cornhusker. After a marriage of 63 years, Whit predeceased her in June 2012. Also deceased are her parents; three brothers, Cyril, Cletus and John; and four sisters, Helen Nordhues, Evelyn Fullen, Ethel Happ and Edith Nordhues. Survivors include four children, David and spouse, Jenny, of Anderson, Kay and spouse, Jay Graepel, of West Chester, Randy of Salley and Ric of Columbia; and grandchildren, Aimee Whittle of Louisiana, Brandon Whittle of Mississippi, Kevin Graepel and spouse, Selby McRae, of Tennessee and Kerrin Whittle of South Carolina. Maxine is also survived by her youngest sister, Dorothy Koenig of Primrose, Nebraska, as well as a large extended family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Norton Funeral Home in Hartsville. A private graveside service will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Hartsville, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband. Norton Funeral Home is honored to serve the Whittle family. [1, 2] | |
