| HIST | of Oswego, South Carolina BESSIE MCCUTCHEN LOWDER Posted Friday, April 30, 2021 6:00 am Bessie McCutchen Lowder, 85, widow of Henry Lee Lowder, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at NHC Healthcare. Born Aug. 2, 1935, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Talmadge Dewitt McCutchen and the late Emma Britton McCutchen. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church at Oswego where she served as a past Sunday School teacher and helped with the Emmanuel Soup Kitchen. She baked the bread for church communion for the past 20 years. She retired from Sumter Area Technical College. She loved gardening; her yard was her sanctuary. She loved cooking and trying new recipes for her friends and family. She was deeply devoted to serving God. She walked the walk. She wanted everyone to know Jesus and feel his love and peace. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were cherished and blessed by her immense love and devotion. Survivors include three children, Jenifer Boykin (Allen Brown) of Ridgeway, Henry L. Lowder Jr. (Tammy) of Oswego and M. Dewitt Lowder of Surfside Beach; three grandchildren, Caroline Boykin Spivey (Jonathan), Henry Boykin (Rebecca) and Charles L. Lowder; four great-grandchildren, Boykin and William Spivey and Olivia and Andy Boykin; two brothers, Joe McCutchen (Nell) and Wayne McCutchen (Patsy); a sister, Mary McCutchen Fulton (Elbert); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas McCutchen, Ernest McCutchen and Earl McCutchen. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bethel United Methodist Church Family Life Center with the Rev. Tim Whited officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Lowder, Charles Lowder, Henry Boykin, Jonathan Spivey, Gary McCutchen and Jamie Burns. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Alice Andrews Sunday School class of Bethel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Little Bethel. Everyone is reminded of COVID-19 social distancing recommendations and masks are encouraged. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Road, Sumter, SC 29153.
