| HIST | Item Staff Writer- Sharron Haley-- MANNING - The young men and women who left their families and county to fight in World War II might have been “wet behind the ears,” but they returned as seasoned veterans with memories that time cannot begin to erase. ¶ Dargan A. Hodge graduated from Sumter High School at the tender age of 16. Three years later, Hodge raised his right hand and swore to serve his country. ¶ Hodge, 79, resides in the Home Branch section of Clarendon County with his daughters, Marlene and Darlene, and shares memories of his days in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with those who are willing to sit and listen. While sitting in his living room with his discharge papers and training school certificates in his hand, Hodge can recall the days and months he served his country as if it were only yesterday. ¶ “I served three years and two months,” Hodge recalled. “Two years, five months and 23 days stateside and seven months and 22 days overseas.” ¶ Sworn in on Feb. 13, 1943, Hodge traveled to Fort Jackson, the first stop of many before heading into conflicts in the Far East. Hodge, who crisscrossed the country attending camps in Florida, Nebraska, California, New Mexico, Tennessee and New York, believes it was his certification as a Chevrolet mechanic that had him assigned to the Army Air Force. ¶ “I could read the General Motors manual and I knew about hydraulics and gaskets,” he said. “Because I knew all that is why they assigned me to the Army Air Force. I didn’t even know the Army had an Air Force.” ¶ Hodge spent Christmas day in 1944 on the road to New York for his trip overseas. Hodge left New York in early 1945 and was flown to Newfoundland, then the Azores, through Casablanca to Cairo with a final stop in mainland China. of Manning, South Carolina DARGAN ASHWORTH HODGE Posted Saturday, December 14, 2019 5:00 am MANNING - Dargan Ashworth Hodge, 95, widower of Mary Caroline Bartlette Hodge, died on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at his home.
