After the election of Governor William Ellerbe, his cousin, he was made the Governor’s Private Secretary in 1897, which he filled with great knowledge. During the governor’s latter part of his term in office, the governor was in such bad health that to keep his office going William assumed the burden of the administration, which he did successfully. During this time, he pursued the study of law at the South Carolina College, where he received his B. L. Degree in June 1900. [1] |
