- Janie's mother, Julia died when she was eight years old. She received a small inheritence from her great-grandfather Sowerhaver. Her father, William N. was guardian of her estate until his death in 1881. Calvin Powell, her uncle who was married to her mother's sister, was appointed guardian of her estate and served until the estate closed in 1886. At the age of 19, she married Jeff. D.
