Drye A married couple was killed Monday morning when a tractor trailer slammed into their vehicle head-on in a crop field. Anthony Howard Sherman, 50, and Donna Tisdale Sherman, 50, formerly of Oakboro and most recently Monroe, were killed in the 11:05 a.m. collision off Renee Ford Road, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. The Shermans were traveling north in a 2004 Buick when they encountered a southbound tractor trailer driven by Maurice Z. Gillespie, 29, of Wingate, nearly 2 miles south of Stanfield, trooper A.C. McLester said. Gillespie crossed the centerline and drifted the 2005 Freightliner off the left shoulder of the road. In an apparent attempt to avoid contact with the 18-wheeler, Anthony Sherman steered his car off the right shoulder. The two vehicles hit head-on in a soybean field, McLester said. The Shermans were pronounced dead at the scene. Both were trapped in the car after an impact of an estimated speed of 50 mph, McLester added. Charges are forthcoming, pending further investigation. It took nearly 30 hours before authorities could contact the couple’s next of kin, since they originally hailed from South Carolina, McLester said.
