Athletic Director Donald Flippin has already gathered a group of eight former coaches, players and administrators to help guide the process of selecting the inaugural class, which will be inducted in the fall of 2026. "Watching the committee members get together and throw out names and recognitions and accolades, it was even more than I knew about at Lakewood. Seeing their excitement, I think Lakewood will be well-represented with a good group of coaches, contributors and athletes," Flippin said. "For me, it's just exciting because this is my third year at Lakewood, and I let the committee know that this isn't about me, it's about them and their legacy. This is about Lakewood High School. They walked these hallways, they've coached, they've played on these fields and these courts; this is their hall of fame. I'm just the vessel to be able to get it started. I'm just excited to be able to do this for them and Lakewood High School." While the idea of a Lakewood Athletic Hall of Fame has been floated in the past, Flippin really started to pursue the idea a little more deliberately when a pair of former players and coaches inquired about the possibility. The first was Curtis Johnson, the former Gator pitcher who went on to pitch at South Carolina before serving as the athletic director at Sumter High and East Clarendon. Johnson planted the seeds before Robbie Wright, another former athlete and coach who played football at Coastal Carolina, hammered home the importance of an athletic hall. "I took what those guys said and realized that we needed something around Lakewood to honor those former athletes and coaches," Flippin said. "I decided it was something that needed to be started sooner, rather than later. It needed to be started now." Flippin was very specific about how he chose his first hall of fame committee. He wanted men and women who had storied history with the school and had experience with a wide range of sports. In the end, he landed with eight stellar names: - Barry Hatfield, who coaches baseball at Laurence Manning but was the Gators' first baseball coach in school history from 1996-2009 and also served as a football coach. - Greg Crolley, Lakewood's first football coach, who guided the Gators from '96 to 2005. - Audrika Gadson, who graduated from Lakewood in 2002 and played basketball, track and field, cross country and cheer. She also coached track, basketball and cross country for the Gators. - James Sweat, a 2004 graduate who coached girls soccer for the Gators from 2018 to 2024 and is a two-time Teacher of the Year at Lakewood. - Mike Carraher, who has coached boys soccer at Lakewood since its inception in 1996 and has also coached girls soccer and girls tennis at the school. - Bryant Logan, who has served as an assistant basketball coach for both the boys and girls teams since 2013. - Jeff Schaffer, who currently coaches girls basketball and golf at Sumter High and led the Lady Gamecocks to the 2023-24 state title. He was both the boys and girls basketball coach at Lakewood, starting with the school's opening. He won two region titles with the Lady Gators. - Cedric McKnight, who graduated from Lakewood in 2001 and played both football and track and field. He served as the school's principal from 2018 to 2021. Flippin reached out to several people in the Lakewood community to help land on the right committee, and he thinks this first group will be the right one for the job. "I basically started compiling a list of names, and a lot of the same names kept resurfacing with different people that I talked to," Flippin said. "I wanted to have a collection of people that coached or played different sports, as well. I wanted to have different voices for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, someone who understands the early years of football and baseball. I wanted people who have a lot of Lakewood pride, graduated from Lakewood, played at Lakewood, coached at Lakewood, just people who are deep-rooted in the Lakewood community and have some sense of belonging to Lakewood. "I told them all of my ideas and what I'd like to do, and all of them jumped on board and said they'd love to help in any way that they could." The group formally met once already this fall to lay out the bylaws and constitution for the athletic hall of fame. The eight-page document, as it stands now, lays out criteria for nomination and induction, including criteria for automatic inductions. Because there are already so many candidates that meet the criteria, the first two years of the athletic hall of fame will not include external nominations. The committee will reconvene in the spring to hone in on the inaugural class, which will then be celebrated during the fall. "Everybody is doing their homework now, talking to people, getting articles and stats, so when we meet again in the spring, we're going to sit down and nominate the first 10, the inaugural group," Flippin said. "We threw the idea out of celebrating them at homecoming, but we're also considering giving them their own night and it will be a hall of fame night, so homecoming can be by itself, at least for the first year.
