The family shared their experience of premature birth and time in the NICU with family, friends, nurses and March of Dimes representatives at the kickoff luncheon on July 29 at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Posted Sunday, August 3, 2025 9:56 am By ALAYSHA MAPLE alaysha@theitem.com March of Dimes returns to Sumter to make every step count, and it all started with its annual kickoff luncheon in preparation for March for Babies this September. The national organization welcomed nurses and loved ones of Kaitlin and Aaron Pekuri and their son, Truett, to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital's Women and Infant Pavilion Conference Center on Wednesday afternoon for a filling lunch and the chance to hear about the trials and triumphs of motherhood firsthand. Kaitlin was diagnosed with preeclampsia and developed HELLP syndrome and PIH during her pregnancy. With a failing liver, an emergency C-section was performed. Truett was born at 31 weeks, weighing 3 pounds, 5 ounces. He was placed on a vent and intubated for surfactant therapy for 24 hours in the NICU before being placed on a CPAP for help with his oxygen levels. Once he started bottle feeds, he had a difficult time and had episodes of bradycardia. Truett would be in the NICU and Level-2 nursery for 54 days. Stories like the Pekuri family's are why March of Dimes puts feet to the pavement each year, in an effort to make change happen and ensure quality care for mothers and babies when they need it most so they can enjoy quality time for years to come. "March for Babies is our chance to connect with friends, families and coworkers to improve the health of all moms and babies in our Sumter community and across the country," said Ashley Edmunds, director of donor development for MOD. "Each step forward leads to a healthy future for us all." If you're interested in making "every step count," registration for March for Babies is open at marchforbabies.org/event/sumter. You can also call Edmunds at (803) 707-4560 or email aedmunds@marchofdimes.org. The 2025 Sumter March for Babies, sponsored by Prisma Health Tuomey, Carolina Children's Dentistry and Becton Dickinson, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Dillon Park, 1200 Clara Louise Kellogg Drive. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 10 a.m. [1] | |
