| HIST | Delaney K. Frierson Mrs. Delaney Kay Frierson represents the Third Judicial Circuit on the South Carolina State Board of Education. She is a native of Houston, Texas, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University. Mrs. Frierson has been a resident of South Carolina and Clarendon County for forty-five years and began her career as a high school Business Education teacher in Sumter School District Two. For 12 years, she taught at Hillcrest High School. She also spent four years as a Business Education teacher in Williamsburg County School District at C. E. Murray High School, where she also served as a State Advisor to a State officer in Future Business Leaders of America. Earning her Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina, Mrs. Frierson was promoted to the district level of Williamsburg County School District. She received her Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership Serving from Nova Southeastern University. Mrs. Frierson served twenty-three years as an educational administrator in the following roles: District Career Specialist, Director of State and Federal Accountability, Coordinator of Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, District Testing Coordinator, as well as, Principal of Hemingway M. B. Lee Middle School. She retired after 39 years as a certified professional educator for the State of South Carolina. Currently, Mrs. Frierson serves as a member on two School Improvement Councils in Clarendon County School District Two, and she is an active sports mom. Her educational mantra is, “Achieving Excellence Without Excuses”. Mrs. Frierson is actively involved in community outreach and women and youth ministries at Lovely Hill Baptist Church, in Holly Hill. She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women and the Sumter Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Mrs. Frierson lives in Clarendon County with her husband, William J. Frierson Sr. They have six children, Ingra, Lula-Josetta, William Jr., Kelvin, Delaney, and Peyton; six grandchildren, Tia, Tierra, Jasmine, Jaelyn, William III, and McKenzie, a bonus granddaughter, Jade-Ann, one great-grandson, Ace Karter, and son-in-law, Stephen. Mrs. Frierson deems it an extreme honor to serve on the State Board of Education as an advocate to educate all students and provide support to all teachers. Posted Friday, July 23, 2021 6:00 am BY SHARRON HALEY Clarendon contributor MANNING - Two Manning High School athletes will be representing their hometown, school and track club in the 2021 AAU Junior Olympics this summer in Texas. Delaney Frierson, 16, a junior at MHS, and Ja'Lencia Griffin, 15, a sophomore at MHS, are not only track athletes and friends, but they are also cousins. Frierson competes in hurdles as well as the 4x1 and 4x4 relays. Griffin competes in the 100-, 200- and 400-yard events as well as the 4x1 relay. "Track is something I have really wanted to do," Frierson said. "I get it from my biological mother, who ran track at Manning High School." Frierson said her favorite event is the 100-meter hurdles. "I get to jump the hurdles," the 16-year-old said. "It's a short distance sprint, and it's very competitive, and I really like competing." Griffin's love for track started at an early age, too. "My cheering coach ran track, and we were racing one day, and I kept up," she said. "I thought this is something that I really do." Frierson and Griffin are each other's biggest cheerleaders. "It's really nice to have my cousin at the finish line cheering me on," Frierson said. Both teens competed in a statewide competition recently with Frierson finishing 6th in the 100-meter hurdles and 8th in the 400-meter hurdles. "I wish I had done better, but I'm young, and I can learn," Frierson said. "I have a couple of years where I'll be able to improve." Griffin finished first in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints. "I was very excited with winning," she added. Both athletes said they're excited to be competing in the 2021 AAU Junior Olympics. "Coming from Manning, South Carolina, I'm very happy to help put Manning on the map for track," Frierson said. Frierson and Griffin also wanted to thank MHS Track Head Coach Dontavis Miller for his help and support. Frierson and Griffin also credited their coaches at the SC Express Track Club, Tiffany and Steven Williams, for helping them improve. "They're great coaches," Frierson added. "Coach Tiffany Williams competed in the Olympics in the 400 hurdles. She has helped me so much." Both athletes said they were humbled and honored to represent their town and track club on the national level. "I'm overwhelmed," Griffin said. "I'm a little excited. I'm a little anxious. I'm excited to be exposed to different runners." Frierson echoed Griffin's comments. "This is a great journey for me," Frierson said. "I never expected and I never thought that I'd get this far. I really appreciate all the love, support and prayers from our friends, our families and our communities." "I'm going for the gold," Frierson added. Getting ready for the national stage, both athletes are traveling to the University of South Carolina every day to practice and improve. The trip to Texas will be expensive. Frierson and Griffin are asking for donations to help them pay for the trip and their time in Texas. Frierson has an account on Cash app: $kayfrierson1.
