- John Henry was born in France in 1866 & came to America on a ship owned
by an uncle. He left the ship in Galveston, TX & struck out on his own at
the age of 13. Two of his brothers also left the ship , but John lost
track of them and as far as is know never saw or heard from any of his
family again. He became a welder for the Santa Fe Railroad Company &
later found his way to Lampasas,TX, where he met & married Mary Jane Webb
on September 6, 1892. She was a cook (for a college or a Catholic school)
in that city at the time.The Henry's moved to Big Valley in Mills County
sometime before 1906, "For The Old Bird" in the Goldthwaite Eagle of
September 1, 1988, recalls that on that date in the year 1906, the first
bale of cotton was "brought in by J.H. Henry from near Warren Crossing in
Big Valley." In 1908 they bought land next to the Hardman farm & lived
there until John'd death in August 1925. John & Mary had 2 children,
Walter Chester & Nettie Mae. Walter married Lucy Pearl Hardman & Nettie
Mae married Naaman "Buck" Hardman, Pearl's half brother. After his
father's death, Walter moved his family to his mother's house & farmed
both places until they moved to town in 1929. John & Mary were both
buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
