Donald Reid Ballard, 85, husband of 26 years to Carolyn O. Ballard, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Born on Sept. 6, 1936, in High Point, North Carolina, he was a son of the late John Archie and Clara Gunter Ballard. He proudly served in the military for more than 23 years, during the Vietnam era. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 547 of Laredo, Texas, VFW Post 10804 of Little River and a lifetime member of Elk's Lodge 2679 of Calabash, North Carolina. Along with spending time with family and friends, he also enjoyed doing yard work, gardening and tinkering in his workshop. He was a loving and generous man not only to his family and friends but also to anyone he felt needed help. Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Donna K. (Rocky) Densmore of Locust Grove, Georgia; a son, Jeffery Scott (Lisa) Ballard of Summerville; a stepdaughter, Mallory Leviner of Sumter; one brother, David (Yvonne) Ballard of Basset, Virginia; five grandchildren, Jaxon, Jordan, Dana, Ginger and Alicia; one step-granddaughter, Kendall; and nine great-grandchildren, Kala, Grace, Olivia, Pearson, Ayden, Bentley, Audrey, Brantley and Drayton. He is also survived by his special friends, Justin Smith, Curtis Thames and Dave Marcella. He was predeceased by one brother, James T. Ballard. A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens on Miller Road. A private family memorial service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sumter County SPCA, 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or to the Emmanuel Soup Kitchen, 421 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.
