For many years he was Chief of the Fire Department and under his supervision, the old engines fought many a battle with fire. Captain Delgar was born in Colleton County, spent his early life in the low country and in the City of Charleston. At the beginning of the war he joined the Palmetto Guards and was stationed on Morris Island until the fall of Fort Sumter. At the close of the war he returned to this county and in 1865 was married to Miss Margaret T. Sanders, who, with three children, survives him. For several years he engaged in planting on Rafting Creek. He removed to Sumter about 22 years ago to engage in mercantile life. He was appointed Auditor of Sumter County in 1883 which office he filled until the beginning of 1890 when he resigned to take the position of Soliciting Agent for the Charleston, Sumter and Northern Railroad." In the 1850 Census he is shown as a son of William G and Emmeline B. Delgar of St. Michael and St. Philip Parish, Charleston, South Carolina. Served in Manigault's Btn, Company A 1862. 17th Regiment of the South Carolina Militia. Services were held in the Church of the Holy Comforter on November 28, 1894.
