Born on Jan. 30, 1940, in Sumter, South Carolina, Margaret lived a life marked by resilience, independence and deep devotion to those she held dear. Margaret was the daughter of Ailene and Morris Wells and grew up in a close-knit family in Sumter. Though her life would take her across the globe, she always carried her Southern roots with pride and affection. Her journey through life was one of strength and determination — qualities that defined her character and inspired those around her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Clough; her parents; and four brothers, Rick Wells, Wayne Wells, Bobby Wells and Lee Wells. Despite these losses, Margaret remained a pillar of strength for her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: sons, Michael Shafer and Jerry Shafer, and daughter, Vicki White. Her legacy continues through her four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Elaine Scrufari and Barbara Benton; and one brother, Bill Wells. Margaret had a sharp wit and a fiercely independent spirit. She was known for putting others first — always ready to support or protect those she loved. Her life was filled with adventure; she traveled the world with curiosity and courage but never lost sight of where she came from. Throughout the challenges she faced, Margaret remained steadfast in living life on her own terms. Her strength of character left an indelible mark on all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on a future date in Sumter. May Margaret’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.  [1]
