Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Riley, widow of Charles Anderson Riley, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of William Gordon and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Belser. She attended Converse College and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in biology. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She attended Abbot Art School in Washington, DC, where she earned a certificate in Interior Design. Later, she completed courses in landscape design and flower arranging. Mrs. Riley was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and a lifetime member of the Daughters of the Holy Cross. She served on the Executive Board, chaired the decorations committee and the church yard committee and served as a Girl Scout and Brownie leader. She was also past president of the Columbia Converse Alumni Club and a past president of the Jonquil Garden Club. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Columbia Museum of Art and served on the Sculpture Garden and Grounds Committees. She was a member of the City of Columbia’s Historical Columbia Foundation serving as a trustee. She was a member of National Trust for Historical Preservation, the South Carolina Historical Society and the Caroliniana Historical Society. She was a member of the Columbia Ball. She was a Friend of the South Carolina State Museum, a member of the Riverbanks Zoological Gardens, Brookgreen Garden, Litchfield Country Club on Pawley’s Island and the Fort Jackson Officers Club Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters, Louise and Virginia; son, Charles Anderson Riley, Jr; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
