of Manning, South Carolina MANNING- Clarendon County dedicated its new law enforcement center Sunday (23 Feb 2003) afternoon to a longtime sheriff. ¶ The Sheriff T. J. Jackson Law Enforcement Center at 218 Commerce St. is named after Thomas Jehu Jackson, better known in Clarendon as “Sheriff Jackson.” ¶ Jackson was born 29 Feb 1916, in Sumter County. At the age of eight, he and his family moved to Clarendon County, a county he grew to love almost as much as he loved law enforcement. ¶ In 1940, Jackson became the first member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol to work in Lexington County and the first patrolman to work in Calhoun County a few years later. In 1951, he was the only member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol working in Clarendon County. ¶ In 1952, Jackson was elected to his first term as sheriff in Clarendon County, a job he held for 28 years from January 1953 through January 1981. He died Oct. 1, 1985, less than five years after leaving office. ¶ “We were very close,” Kay Jackson said Sunday afternoon. “I spent most of my time with him at his office or in his patrol car.” ¶ Katherine Jackson McClam remembers her first husband as a “mediator.” ¶ “He loved to make peace,” she said. “He lived law enforcement 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” ¶ Sunday’s honor was something he would have been proud of, she said. ¶ “He loved Clarendon County and especially the people of Clarendon County.” McClam said. ¶ Clarendon County Sheriff Keith Josey remembers Jackson as “always finding something good in everybody.” ¶ Jackson always treated people with dignity and looked for their good side no matter what they did, Josey said. ¶ “I’d like to thank Dwight Stewart and all the members of Clarendon County Council for giving this honor to a great lawman” Josey said. “This is an honor that was long overdue.” [4, 5] |
