LUTZ Posted Sunday, March 18, 2018 6:00 am Sumter native and longtime businesswoman Margaret Dorothy Burns Lutz, 94, died at her home on Tucson Drive on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Mrs. Lutz owned and operated Burns Gift Shop on Bultman Drive for 25 years. Prior to that, she managed the gift shop on the second floor of W.B. Burns & Sons Hardware on Main Street in Sumter. She was born Oct. 1, 1923 to the late Ethel McDonald Burns and W.B. Burns Jr., who, with his brothers, owned and operated Burns Hardware for most of the 20th century. Mrs. Lutz was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Lutz, who died in 1990, and her brother, Sgt. William H. Burns, who died in 1945. She graduated from Edmunds High School and Montreat College and attended Furman University. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Sumter. She is survived by two sons, Benton Lutz (Maxine) of Beaufort and Hallett Lutz of Sumter; five grandchildren, Chad Lutz (Angela) of Florence, Alicia Lutz of Charleston, Justin Lutz of Sumter, Maggie Lutz of Pinewood and Will Lutz (Elizabeth) of Decatur, Georgia; and four great-grandchildren, Travis, Zach and Garris Lutz of Florence and Walker Lutz of Decatur, Georgia. The family is grateful to her caregivers Jenny Dennis, Rosa Lee Jennings, Azalea Hampton, Betsy Rufus, Henrietta Wells and Diana Merchant and the staff of Agape Hospice for the support they provided during the last 10 months of her life. A graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Keith Getz of St. James Lutheran on Monday at 3 p.m. at Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive guests at a reception at the Lutz home at 25 Tucson Drive immediately following the service. Condolences may be sent to the home.
