GASTONIA, N.C. -- Jean Kolb Brawley, 82, of Gastonia, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Kolb and Eunice Osteen Kolb. Mrs. Brawley was a 1949 graduate of Winthrop College and taught at Wray Jr. High School in Gastonia and at the old Orthopedic Hospital in Gastonia. A member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Brawley had a strong love for foreign missions. She also served as a Sunday school teacher, circle leader, prayer warrior, and friend to many. Among her many interests, Mrs. Brawley loved animals, sewing, gardening, singing and Bible reading. She was known for her great sense of humor. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker and mother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Thomas Johnson Brawley Jr.; brother, Benjamin Kolb; and sisters, Blanche Alsbrooks, Juanita Kolb and Edna Hudson.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Johnson "Tommy" Brawley III of Gastonia; daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Lindsay Browning of Charlotte, Sally Culpepper of McCormick and Suzanne and Jeff Allers of Berlin, Germany; brothers, Oscar Kolb of Elloree and Jerome Kolb of Dallas, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Earl Cook of Sumter; and grandchildren, Sam and Ben Allers.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First ARP Church with Pastor Eddie Spencer officiating. Burial will be private at Gaston Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank all of the healthcare workers at Bellaire who were "like family to Jean" and for making her life so comfortable during her stay.
