| HIST | John and Frances had a plantation on the PeeDee River in South Carolina. Lived in Sumter District, South Carolina before moving to Louisiana. John moved to what is now present day Bishopville, S.C. between 1788 & 1794 and died there about 1798. He married Frances “Polly” Langston in N.C. She died prior to 13 Oct 1820 in Sumter County, S.C. Also, Quoting from the LEE COUNTY OBSERVER published 14 Nov 1979, an article written in 1962 by Frank DesChamps, treasurer of Lee County is as follows: “Prior to the Revolutionary War this section was a wilderness with Indian trails. These trails seem to be the beginning of roads which crossed here in what is now Bishopville. At the crossing of the roads settled a Singleton family who operated what became known as Singleton Tavern. In the center of the road near the tavern stood a giant post oak. Under the oak many battles took place due to strong beverages sold at the tavern. After the death of Mrs. Singleton the remaining members of the family moved west leaving many unmarked graves in the family cemetery. The cemetery was visible for many years and the location was back of the old Opera House on Main Street. The cross roads had been known as Singleton’s Cross Roads.” [9, 10] | |
