In 1741 he married Mary Williams, an heiress who owned 2,038 acres on the Ashley River in St. George Dorchester Parish. He added to his wife’s inheritance which he named Middleton Place. His property holdings totaled 26,263 acres, and at his death he owned 199 slaves.  [4]
