They (Robert and Harriett) lived at Ridge Spring She was a teacher for 42 years and retired from the profession in 1971. She began teaching during the Roaring Twenties, moved home during the Depression and was paid by a voucher, and lived through World War II in which her husband, Archibald L. Fripp, Sr. fought. She enjoyed teaching in the 50’s in Johnston, moved to Germany with her husband and daughter in the 60’s, returned to teach in Aiken, then retired. During the early years, she boarded with families and taught under circumstances we read about in books. Yet she loved the students and life. She would still hear from or see some of her former students over the years and cherished those memories. After the death of her first husband, she married Dr. R. W. Barnwell, Jr. PhD, who became a wonderful grandfather for her grandchildren. She was a member of SCEA Retired Teachers, the Hugonaut Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, First Families of S. C., and the Genelaogical Societies of Edgefield, Saluda, and Columbia. She was a member of the Ridge Spring Garden Club. She wanted to be remembered as saying, “I loved my fellow man.” Her obituary said “she is survived by her brother, Dr. Joe Brunson, his wife, Charlotte” Does that mean that all of her other siblings predeceased her? jkh [4, 5] |
