Sumter), .....residence of Charles Cantey, Jr.," ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reference: "Thomas Sumter" by Anne King Gregarie, PHD (Published 1931, R. L Bryan co.) P. 29: Charles Cantey of Maltasee Plantation (Berkly County) has seven daughters, all said to be beautiful. Thomas Sumter purchased a small plantation nearby. Neighbor William Jamison, married to Mary Cantey, died the summer of 1766. Bequeathed 19,000 pounds to Mary and his sister Agnes Stit of Ireland. In addition, she received a gift of nine slaves from her father, Charles Cantey. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Letter from Jeannette Broadway Watts gives Mary's birth as between 1723 and 1727. She also gives death year as 1817 rather than 1766. 1766 cannot be correct since Mary married Thomas Sumter in 1767. | |
