HIST | of the Isle of Palms, South Carolina Jean West ISLE OF PALMS — Jean Meredith Chandler West, 87, of Isle of Palms, passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2012. She was the widow of Eugene Jagar West of Charleston. A child prodigy of the piano, Jean was born on March 28, 1925, in Sumter County, a daughter of John Herbert and Geulieme Mellette Chandler. She graduated from Edmunds High School in 1942 and Winthrop College in 1946 with a degree in music and elementary education. After her marriage in November 1946, Jean and her husband served the Episcopal churches in Hagood, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Morganton, N.C., Summerville and Denmark. A longtime resident of the Isle of Palms, she was a teacher at Stella Maris Catholic School in Mount Pleasant and Chicora Elementary School and Goodwin Elementary School in North Charleston. In 1976, she began her 24-year career at Boone Hall Plantation, retiring as office manager at age 75, and loving every moment with the Boone Hall family. An avid gardener, she was passionate about working in her yard on Isle of Palms and gained a reputation for her lovely plants and flowers. She especially loved hosting neighborhood Christmas parties and walking the beach with her little dog, Sugar Bear. Jean is survived by five children, Meredith Chandler West Yates (David) of Mount Pleasant, Allan Eugene West of Cincinnati, Ohio, Eugene "Gene" Jagar West Jr. (Linda) of Sullivan's Island, Gwendolyn "Gwen" Legare West Wilson (Roger) of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Susan Geulieme West Jessen (Ed) of Huger. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, David Chandler Yates of Mount Pleasant, Jeffrey "Jeff" Lucas Yates and his wife, Deborah "DeeDee", of Mount Pleasant, Stephen Allan West (Krista) of Lexington, Amy West Ellisor (Mike) of Columbia, Hannah West Wicker of Winston-Salem, N.C., Eugene Jagar "Bubba" West III (Lorraine) of Daniel Island, Sean Michael Wilson (Melissa) of Huntington, W.Va., Matthew Chandler Wilson (Michaelyn) of Chesapeake, Ohio, Stacy Geulieme Jessen Gomez (Fernando) of Huger and Janie West Jessen of Mount Pleasant; and two step-grandchildren, Marshall Jessen (Camie) of McClellanville and Caroline Jessen Vea (Matthew) of Englewood, N.J. There are 11 great-grandchildren, Jordan and Tyler Yates, Brody and Dylan West, Addison and Janssen Ellisor, Rocky Walker, Cayla Wicker, Madison and Sydney Wilson, and Connor Wilson; step-great-grandsons, Rigel and Aiden Jessen; and step-great-granddaughters, Hannah and Elisabeth Wicker, and Zoey Vea. Jean is survived by her sister, Dorothy Chandler Jacobs of Columbia. She was predeceased by her sisters, Gwendolyn Chandler Nettles, Ellene Chandler Deery and Edna Chandler Suber; and her brother, Soule Mellette Chandler. The family wishes to thank all those at Sandpiper Rehab and Nursing for their care and concern throughout the last five years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, Mount Pleasant. A private family burial will be at a later date.
