Laurence was an Irishman and came to South Carolina from Virginia as Lieutenant in “Lee’s Legion.” He was distinguished in many battles and by many acts of personal bravery. His exploit of using a British officer as a shield for himself at the battle of Eutaw is the subject of a painting in the State House at Columbia, South Carolina. On the organization of the State militia, after the Revolution, he was appointed Adjutant General, and he held the office til his deathl He also served the State in its legislature.
