Olin, as a boy, lost one arm, it being crushed in farm machinery. They moved to Columbia, South Carolina. They met a tragic death: as was her custom, she met him at the door every morning to assist him in removing his knapsack containing a loaded shotgun, which on this particular day accidentally discharged, killing her almost instantly. The shock was too great for Mr. Rhodes, so he walked into the yard, turning the gun on himself and firing a fatal shot. They had lived in New Brookland (near Columbia) more than twenty five years. Their double funeral services were conducted in New Brookland Baptist Church. [1] |
