ROCK HILL -- Dr. Allie Glenn Phifer, 84, of Sumter, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at HarborChase Assisted Living in Rock Hill.
Born March 30, 1925, in Sumter, Dr. Phifer was a son of Louisa Williams Phifer and Charles McKnight Phifer. In 1943, he graduated from Edmunds High School in Sumter and entered the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. He then attended the University of South Carolina, where he was a member and secretary of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After three years, he obtained his pre-dental requirements to enter the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950. Upon graduation from dental school, he entered the U.S. Air Force as a first lieutenant in the Dental Corps, rising to the rank of captain until his honorable discharge in 1952. At this time, he entered private practice as a dentist in Sumter. In his 43 years of dental practice, Dr. Phifer was a member of the South Carolina Dental Association and was elected president of the Pee Dee District Dental Society. Dr. Phifer was a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, a member of the International Academy of Orthodontics, and a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He served on the staff of Tuomey Hospital.
Dr. Phifer was proud of his lifetime membership in the Sumter Kiwanis Club, where he was active in club activities. He was also a member of the Sumter Elks Club. Dr. Phifer was a member of First Baptist Church, Sumter, from childhood.
He was preceded in death by his eight brothers and sisters; his first wife, Adelaide Lavinia Siddall; and his son, Allie Glenn Phifer Jr.
Surviving are two daughters, Christie Phifer Timmerman and her husband, Shelden Timmerman Jr., of Rock Hill and Louisa Williams Phifer of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Nancy Kristin Timmerman of Greenville and Lindsay Timmerman Niedringhaus and husband, Steven Davis Niedringhaus, of Greenville.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robert D. Shrum officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the cemetery.
