85th Inf. Div. 1942-1945 E. A. M. Ribbon with 3 battle stars Combat Inf. Badge; Silver Star with Oak Leaf Clusters; Bronze Star-Rome Arno Campaign- A World War II Army veteran where he received the EAME (European Theatre) Ribbon with three battle stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, two Silver Stars (the third-highest military award designated solely for heroism in combat), one with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Freedom Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He rose from private first class to the rank of second lieutenant. Just prior to his release, he had been recommended for promotion to first lieutenant. Shortly after World War II began in 1939, Newman and three friends decided they wanted to join the Army. However, the parents of all four men objected. ¶ On Oct. 16, 1942, Newman was drafted and sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi, for six weeks of basic training. During his time there, Newman was awarded the Sharpshooter Medal and assigned to the 85th Infantry Division. ¶ By mid-1944, Newman had risen from private first class to platoon sergeant to staff sergeant. Within the same year, Newman would also become tech sergeant and then second lieutenant. Later, he would be recommended for a promotion to first lieutenant, shortly before being honorable discharged. ¶ He received one of the Silver Stars in July 1944 after placing himself in the line of heavy enemy machine-gun fire in order to ward off German troops with han grenades. ¶ The other Silver Star came less than a month later when he again ran through heavy enemy fire. But, this time, it was to retrieve a severely wounded comrade. ¶ After three years of service, he was discharged Dec. 5, 1945, and returned home. [13, 14, 17] |
