He became lieutenant-colonel of the 2nd SC Cavalry Regiment and a member of its field and staff when the 4th SC Cavalry Battalion merged with several other independent South Carolina cavalry commands to form the 2nd SC Cavalry Regiment on 22 Aug 1862. He was killed in action on 9 Jun 1863 in the Battle of Brandy Station, Virginia, the largest cavalry battle of the War. (Compiled Service Records, CW0566).  [3]
