The Burgesses were weavers in Ireland, and our grandfather, Thomas, was the youngest of the family when they came over in 1791. He married Frances Jane Bryson, an orphan girl, at the home of Mr. E. Ruthven Plowden, of Brewington, Clarendon County, whose family were very close friends. In the old land grant from George III to the Plowdens, John and Margaret Burgess, our grand-uncle and aunt, were two of the witnesses. The heavy oak chest, which came over with the books, is still kept as a precious article of furniture in one of the early homes in Clarendon County. We never saw our Grandfather, but I remember Grandmother quite well. Such a dear little old woman, always wearing a white cap, and a small fringed “tippet” around her shoulders. She was in our home when we were little children, and was always busy darning or helping somewhere. She lived at Broad Branch with Auntie, and rests with other dear ones at “Brewington.” [2] |
