| HIST | of Bishopville, South Carolina Margaret D. Smith BISHOPVILLE — Margaret Drakeford Smith, 89, widow of Jared Manly Smith, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013. She was born April 27, 1923, near Camden, to the late Bryan and Sue Drakeford. She leaves a legacy of loving kindness and the ability to see the good in everyone. If you knew her, you are richer for the experience. She was known to multiple generations of Lee County residents as the “seed lady” at Jared’s Ace Hardware in Bishopville. More than a few gardeners refused to purchase their supplies without her advice as to the exact quantity, spacing and timing of the seed planting. She is survived by her children, Jared M. and Marie Smith of Bishopville (she never allowed anyone to add “in law” to Marie’s status as her daughter); two grandsons, Bryan Smith of Greenville and Paul Smith of Bishopville; a sister, Mary Lois Drakeford Fletcher (Bobby) of Lugoff; her caregiver, nurse and friend, Easter Glass; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Drakeford, Roy Drakeford and Troy Drakeford. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Bishopville with the Rev. Sam Stevens, the Rev. Henry Altman and the Rev. Lin Kirkman officiating. The family wishes to thank Easter Glass, Joyce Cain, Amedisys Hospice of Sumter and her many friends for their kind and compassionate care.
