  HIST	died unmarried William J. Reynolds (1808 - 1881), Person ID # I69833.  On singletonfamily.org, he is listed as having died unmarried, which he did since he could not legally marry Levenia Brisbane/Brisban as she was a woman of color and probably one of his slaves.  Mr. Reynolds was a friend of my 4g-grandfather, James Corbett (who married Holland Smith, daughter of Arthur Smith) and was mentioned in James Corbett's will.  James Corbett  left a negro woman, Nancy, and her children to his friend Colonel William J. Reynolds.  James also left money and land to Col. Reynolds;  I believe that the money and land were to be used to take care of Nancy and her children.  However, James' sons broke the will and sold Nancy and her children (Eliza, Preston, Isabella) with the idea of splitting the proceeds between themselves.  Col Reynolds was able to purchase some of the individuals but not all.  (I wonder if Nancy's children were also James Corbett's children and if James left them to his friend, Col. Reynolds, because the colonel had defied convention and raised a family with a woman of color.) I am not sure if the Reynolds family acknowledged Levenia's children as also being the children of William Reynolds.  I have been told that there are individuals of color in the Sumter area who trace their line back to James Corbett (husband of Holland), and I imagine that there are individuals of color in the Sumter are (and beyond) who trace their line back to William Reynolds.  Currently, I have not had the pleasure of meeting any of my distant relatives but may one day have the opportunity.  [1, 2]
