| HIST | of Chowan County, North Carolina WILL OF JOHN SINGLETON: “This 14 May 1762, I John Singleton of the County of Edgecombe in the Province of N.C., being sick & weak of body but of sound and perfect memory thanks be to God for the same: And therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die to make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following viz: That is to say first and principally I give my soul unto the hand of Almighty God who gave it me and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in Christian like manner at the descretion of my Executors hereafter named nothing doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again; and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give and bequeath in manner and form following: Imperimus: It is my will that all my lawful debts be first paid. I lend unto my loving wife Mary Singleton my plantation whereon I now live with all my land on the south side of Bear Branch during her natural life if she shall chuse to dwell upon the land. After her decease or refusal to dwell upon the said plantation I give and bequeath the aforesaid plantation with all the priviledges thereunto belonging to my son JOHN SINGLETON to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Mary Singleton all my household goods except one chest and what is in it to be at her own disposing. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son JOHN SINGLETON all my lands on the north side of Bear Branch with all the new survey to him and his heirs forever. I give my chest with drawers with all that is in it, one new broad ax, one whip saw and _______furniture to him and his heirs forever with one gunn. Item: I give unto my son James Singleton all my cupers toules and an old whip saw out of order to him and his heirs forever. Item: My will is that all my rook of cattle horses and horse kind, hogs and sheep be equally divided between my wife and my two sons James and John at their own discretion and my riding saddles to be divided after the same manner and of all the rest of my estate of what nature or kind so ever not all ready given I give to my loving wife Mary Singleton to be at her own disposing. And of this my will I make constitute nominate and appoint my well beloved wife Mary Singleton and my son JOHN SINGLETON my hole and sole executors revoking all other will by me heretofore made rectifing and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In Witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and fixt my seal the day and year above written. SIgned sealed published pronounced and declared by the said testator to be his last will and testament in the presents of us: Jno Thomas, Joshua Bently and Thomas Amason.” Edgecombe County January Inferior Court 1763: “The within last will and testament of JOHN SINGLETON deceased was exhibited on oath by the executors and proved by the oaths of the subscribing witnesses and at the same time the executors qualified according to law proved that the same be certified and the will be recorded.” Signed by F.
