Hood, 77, husband of Sylvia Ann Sandy Hood, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at a Bishopville nursing facility. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Marion and Dora Hood. Mr. Hood was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and the Hillside Hunting Club. He worked many years with Campbell's Soup Co. and retired from Gold Kist Inc. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; three children, Laura Salsman (Kirk Amerson) of Beaufort, Chris Hood of Sumter and Roger Hood (Sandra) of Lugoff; one stepson, Benjamin Gladden (Debbie) of Grand Prairie, Texas; six grandchildren, Sharon Salsman, Duane Salsman, Meradith Hood, Rocky Hood, Matthew Gladden and Gabriella Hart; three great-grandchildren, Bryson Archie, Savannah Carter and Paisley Ann Carter; four sisters, Blanch Ray of Dalzell, Letha Russ (Tim) of Ohio, Shelby Douglas of Clover and Mary Benenhaley of Sumter; three brothers, Riley Hood (Mary) of Warner Robbins, Ga., Burnette Hood (Mattie) of Spartanburg and Russell Hood (Shirley) of Mayesville; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Benenhaley. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Long Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. James Allen and the Rev. Dr. Eleazer Benenhaley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roger Hood, Chris Hood, Timothy Benenhaley, Greg Ray, Duane Salsman and Rocky Hood. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hillside Hunting Club and Marion Hood. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2316 Harper St. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4124 Clemson Blvd., Suite L, Clemson, SC 29261 or to Long Branch Baptist Church, 2535 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell, SC 29040.   Cause of wreck unknown-Authorities identify woman killed in Saturday accident- by Sharron Haley- Item Staff Writer- ¶ The 57-year-old woman killed Saturday in a single-vehicle accident on U. S. 76/378 across from Shaw AIr Force Base has been identified. ¶ Gloria Hood Benenhaley, 57, of 2477 Peach Orchard Road was killed instantly at 2:30 p.m. when the car she was in flipped several times, said Sumter County Coroner Verna Moore. The victim was wearing a seat belt, officials said. ¶ Benenhaley and her two grandchildren, a 1-week-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, were traveling east on U.S. 76/378 in a 1999 Toyota when the vehicle suddenly left the highway and struck a culvert, causing the vehicle to turn over several times before coming to rest upside-down in the east bound lanes of U.S. 76/378, said Lance Cpl. J. M. Robinson of the South carolina Highway Patrol. ¶ The infant, who was riding in a child seat, was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Palmetto Health RIchland. The other child, who was wearing a seat belt, was also airlifted to the Columbia hospital. ¶ Officials said the children, who both received non-life threatening injuries, were improving Sunday afternoon. ¶ Authorities haven’t been able to determine why Benenhaley’s vehicle swerved off the highway, Robinson said. ¶ The accident is still under investigation, Robinson said.
