Where did Ray come from? jkh Date Published: August 9, 2009 He may be the P-15's No. 1 fan 79-year-old has been attending games at Riley since the 1940s BENEHALEY By JOE PERRY Item Senior Staff Writer jperry@theitem.com When Stanley Benehaley was a kid and didn't have money to get into Riley Park, he would climb a tree and sit on a limb above center field to watch the P-15's play. "If I didn't have money to come in, I'd go find a limb," Benenhaley, 79, said Friday with a chuckle as he watched the Sumter American Legion P-15's battle Kirby Stewart Post 24 from Bradenton, Fla. "Or I'd look through cracks in the fence." Benenhaley has been attending P-15 games at Riley Park since the 1940s, he said on Friday, and the Sumter native's love of baseball started early on with sandlot games. It's tough to say just how many games he's taken in. "Oooh, I don't know," he said. "Probably more than anybody here." One of Sumter's most prolific baseball fans can joke that after serving a stint in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954, he came back to Riley Park "and got my seat back." Benenhaley retired from Shaw Air Force Base after 28 years of service as a supply clerk, and guesses the best team he ever saw take the field was in 1962. The play that year of Norman Partin and Robert Bradley stand out, he said, while the legendary Bobby Richardson was the best player to ever put on a P-15's uniform, he thinks. A heavy scrapbook sits next to him and is quickly filling up with Item articles of the P-15's, and detail former P-15 and Citadel All-American Richard Jones' recent draft by the Chicago Cubs. Benenhaley knows most of the players on the current roster, and is a third cousin of Jeremy Buckner, who plays first base and pitches. "Well, I know most of 'em, and some are relatives," he explained. Catcher Tony Micklon is one of his favorite players, because he always checks in on Benenhaley. "He always comes to shake my hand," he said, smiling. Like most sports fans that follow a talented and winning team, he enjoys the playoffs the most and after getting a hot dog and a Coke, takes his place in the stands close to first base. On Friday, a day game, he stayed out of the bright sun, and a fellow fan jokingly chided him for not taking his "real seat," which is closer to the field in the uncovered bleachers. BENENHALEY Posted Wednesday, February 7, 2024 6:00 am Stanley M. Benenhaley, 93, widower of Melissa Ann Ray Benenhaley, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at his home. Born April 7, 1930, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jesse Noah Benenhaley and Emma Oxendine Benenhaley. Mr. Benenhaley was a member of Springbank Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Shaw Air Force Base Civil Service after 31 years. He enjoyed hunting and watching the Atlanta Braves and P-15's baseball. Survivors include three children, Janis Stiltner, Michael Benenhaley and Bobby D. Benenhaley (Shanna); five grandsons, Chris Benenhaley (Starr), Matthew Benenhaley (Jennifer), Justin Okonek, Cameron Benenhaley and Colton Benenhaley; six great-grandsons, Alex Benenhaley, Cory Benenhaley, Chaz Benenhaley, A.J. Green (Jasmine) and Alonso Green; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Ray. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Springbank Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Steve Miller. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Colton Benenhaley, Cameron Benenhaley, Chris Benenhaley, Anthony Benenhaley, Frank Delgado and Matthew Benenhaley. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Vanliew and Gerry Vanliew. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Springbank Baptist Church and other times at the home. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
