By COREY DAVIS cdavis@theitem.com Yes, we're open. That's what Billy Hughes wants people in the area to know about Custom Cabinets and Doors at 3275 Tindal Road. The 63-year-old Hughes is the shop manager and is running the day-to-day operations of the shop for Lee Tindal, his sister-in-law, who also is a Sumter judge. Tindal's husband, Joe, died of cancer in May. Lee Tindal asked Hughes if he would take over and run the family business because she had no experience in running a shop. Hughes, who worked in architecture engineering design for 15 years, agreed. He said the biggest challenge since the passing of Joe Tindal is informing the public that the five-year business is still ongoing. "A lot of people thought the business closed when Joe died, and we want people to know that the shop is still operating," Hughes said. "A lot of the home building in Sumter is going to Roy's Wood Products in Lugoff instead of coming here. We're hoping the community will support a business here at home. We can make the same doors, and we believe our doors are more convenient. We also have free delivery, and if people go to (Roy's), they have to charge for delivery." Tindal said there were a couple of major reasons why she kept the shop open. "We still had orders to take care of, as well as I wanted our employees to keep their job," she said. "My husband loved meeting and working with people, and one of his requests was to keep business the going. I wish my husband was still around to run it, but I'm so grateful that my brother-in-law has stepped in and helped out." Hughes said that while Joe Tindal was sick, the business wasn't run to the shop's previous standard. Hughes said he hopes clients will realize things are going to be different under new management. "During Joe's illness, he had to rely on somebody else to manage the shop, and it went down during that time," Hughes said. "Now that we are under new management, we want people to know that they are going to get treated right. We just want the public to give us a chance because we want to get the business back profitable again, and we would love to have the public's business." Hughes acknowledged that one of the obstacles facing Custom Cabinet and Doors is losing the contract of Gainey Construction Co. LLC, which is owned by Dean Gainey. Hughes said Gainey Construction is the largest home-building contractor in Sumter. "It broke my heart that we lost his business due to a miscommunication with myself and his manager," Hughes said. "He decided to go to Roy, and his business was big enough that it gave us two or three orders a week. It's devastating for a struggling business, and we're hoping by getting the word out that we can eventually get enough contractors that can fill what we lost from Gainey."
