Amerson, died on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Sumter, a son of the late Monroe Charlie and Ellena McKinzie Amerson. He retired from the U.S. Army as a first sergeant after 21 years of faithful service to this country. He was a Korean War and Vietnam veteran. During his military career, he received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was the oldest member and only Korean War veteran of the Warriors Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club Sumter Chapter. Following his military career, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, where he retired in 1995 after 30 years of dedicated service. He was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed riding the roads. Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Chipper Amerson, Mark Amerson and Timmy Amerson; four stepsons, James Deaton, Allen Parker, Larry Parker and Wayne Parker; five daughters, Janice Phelps, Charlene Baxley, Nancy Trapp, Patty Amerson and Raquell McDonald; a stepdaughter, Debbie Parker; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Domic of Detroit, Mich., Libby Mallard of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Inez Fuller of California; and a special granddaughter, Allison Brook Parker. He was predeceased by a brother, Leroy Amerson, and a sister, Myrtle Sharpe. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Program, Fort Jackson c/o John Kaiser, 4247 Dorsey Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.
