Touchberry, a geneticist who has garnered many honors in his long and distinguished career, was born on a farm that bordered the west side of Big Branch and approximately one mile south of the Paxville-Manning Road in Sammy Swamp Township of Clarendon County. “I spent most of the first 21 years of my life in that area and still have part ownership of the old home place,” he said. “I knew the area before there was a Lake Marion, a Safety-Kleen dump and before pilot training planes flew over in the early 1940s.” After graduation from high school, Touchberry farmed cotton and corn and raised pigs and chickens for two years. With the money he earned plus a Sears Roebuck scholarship, he entered Clemson College in 1940. His education was interrupted by military service, but he returned to Clemson in 1945, graduating with honors and a bachelor of science degree in animal science. He continued his education, receiving graduate degrees in animal genetics and breeding at Iowa State University. After receiving his doctorate, Touchberry joined the faculty of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he taught and did research until 1970. During this time, he received a Fulbright fellowship to study the dairy sire progeny testing stations in Denmark and to lecture on the use of statistics in animal science. In 1967-68 he worked with the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission as a geneticist in evaluating grant proposals in radiation, human, population and mammalian genetics. From 1970 to 1983, he served as professor and head of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota, leading the school into the following new facilities: new meat science laboratory, swine genetics and nutrition facilities, turkey research facilities and many others. Also during his career, Touchberry served on many international symposiums, committees and research teams in countries that included the then USSR, Mauritania, Poland, five West African countries, India, Brazil and Trinidad. His many honors include the American Society of Animal Science Award in animal breeding and genetics in 1971, designation as the outstanding alumnus of the departments of animal, dairy and poultry science of Clemson University in 1984 and alumni. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta, Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta and the Society of Phi Zeta, a national veterinary medicine honor. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Illinois Congress of PTA and is listed in American Men of Science and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. He and his wife, the former Caroline Fuhrmeister, own and partially operate a farm in Iowa and a small farm in South Carolina. of Ely, Iowa Robert W. Touchberry Sr. ELY, Iowa -- Robert W. Touchberry Sr., 89 of Ely, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Burial will follow in Rogers Grove Cemetery, rural Ely. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Robert was born Oct. 27, 1921, in South Carolina, a son of Samuel and Lynwood (Gibson) Touchberry. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Clemson University, Class of 1944. Bob received his master of science and Ph.D. in animal breeding and genetics at Iowa State University in 1947-48. Bob was a professor, teaching genetics and statistics at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana); was chairman of the Animal Science Department at the University of Minnesota (St. Paul); and concluded his career as the Sesnon Endowed Chair of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis. He was a Fulbright Research Fellow in Denmark (1956-57) and served at the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C. (1967-68). Bob was involved in animal breeding and agriculture for more than 44 years, until his retirement from university academics in 1992. He remained involved in professional agricultural societies (ASAS, ADSA), and the family farms in Iowa and South Carolina. His giving to universities continues to aid the success of ag students. Bob was active in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) in California and Iowa. He married Caroline Fuhrmeister on Sept. 1, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ely. Bob was a member of the Ely American Legion and First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Bob is survived by his children, Bob Jr. (Jenny) of Longmont, Colo., Pam Touchberry of Marion, Lee (Cindy) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Alan (Marlene) of St. Louis Park, Minn.; and six grandchildren, Jenny, David, Natalie, Anna, Sam and James; and three great-grandchildren, Brenna, Joshua and Asher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline, on Sept. 12, 2006. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to NAMI of Linn County.
