From 1940 to 1942, she served as operating room supervisor, and from 1942-1947, as superintendent of nurses at Marion Sims Hospital in Lancaster, South Carolina. From 1948 to 1950, she was staff nurse anesthetist at Greenville General Hospital and returned to Marion Sims in May 1950 to begin serving as superintendent, until her retirement. She held memberships in numerous professional organizations. She was appointed a trustee of the S. C. Hospital Association in 1958 and elected president of the S. C. Hospital Association and the Carolinas-Virginia Hospital Conference in 1961. Additional offices held with the SCHA included chairmanships of the Councils of Professional Practice, Association Services, and Association Development Division. She was a member of the Lancaster County Mental Health Association, serving as vice president in 1957, president 1958-1959, and member of the executive committee as well as a member of the advisory board for the Tri-County Mental Health Clinic. She held additional memberships in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, American Nurses Association, American College of Hospital Administrators, Lancaster Study Club, Chamber of Commerce. In her retirement years, she was an active member of IOP Garden Club, serving as president 1983-1987; chaired numerous committees with the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston; and was a National Accredited Flower Show judge. She enjoyed many hours writing historical research as a member of the DAR Fort Sullivan Chapter as well as holding the offices of chaplain, registrar, and treasurer. at death- she had 16 nieces and nephews [2, 4, 7, 8] |
