She is the only South Carolina pianist and one of just 20 from the U.S. who participated with more than 100 international pianists in the conference held at the Isidor Bajic Music School. Smith performed Robert Schumann's Davidsb ndlert nze, Opus 6, which she described as "probably my favorite piece in the whole world." As the conference addresses all aspects of art, pianism and piano pedagogy, Smith also presented a lecture on the Schumann piece before sitting at the Steinway to perform it. Her performance was recorded in DVD format. Smith said she was introduced with the words "Jane Luther Smith, United States of America," repeated twice. "I felt like I was at the Olympics," she said, "proud to be representing my country." Other presenters, from such countries as Canada, Austria, Cuba, Germany, Republic of Korea, South Korea, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, also performed and/or gave lectures, seminars or master classes during the weeklong conference. Held June 27 through July 3, the conference began with a gala opening ceremony concert of three Bach concerti performed at the Novi Sad Synagogue by the Camerata Academica Orchestra (Serbia) conducted by Andrej Bursac and featuring soloists Viktor Radic, Dragutin Vucic, Slobodanka Stevic, Aleksandar Gligic and Biljana Gorunovic. Invited by celebrated concert pianist Dr. Dorian Leljak, former professor at Yale University and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Smith's attendance was her first in the four years of the prestigious conference. Although she had not previously met Leljak, Smith knew his reputation. Leljak, she noted, is the winner of many international piano competitions and is professor of piano at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. He is also the president of the World Piano Teachers Association and is often called upon to serve as juror for piano competitions around the world. Leljak also received his doctor of musical arts degree from Yale University, where two of Smith's teachers, John Kenneth Adams and John Williams, have studied. Both are distinguished professors emeritus of music at the University of South Carolina Columbia, where Smith received both her bachelor and master of music degrees (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa). She also received the Licentiate Performer's Diploma in piano from London's Royal Academy of Music. Isidor Bajic, founder of the school named for him, was also a renowned composer, Smith said. "I was presented with several of his compositions, which I intend to perform in the future," she added. "They are really beautiful." As the biggest music school in Vojvodina, Isidor Bajic Music School has received many awards and recognition from around the world. Pupils are chosen by audition for the school strictly on the basis of talent and continue their education both within the country and abroad. Rich concert activities of the school's pupils contribute significantly to the cultural life of Novi Sad. In 2009, Isidor Bajic Music School celebrated its centenary. Smith has been a featured performer on the South Carolina Educational TV and Radio networks, recorded two CDs of classical piano music and received the "Woman of Achievement Award" in the area of Fine Arts presented by the S.C. YWCA of the Upper Lowlands Inc. In addition to being in demand as a solo recitalist, she is a full-time faculty member of the University of South Carolina Sumter and is listed on the S.C. Arts Commission Approved Performing Artist Roster. The owner of Jane Luther Smith Piano Studios, she also serves as organist for the historic Church of the Ascension (Episcopal) in Hagood. Smith's experience as a performer has been diverse and widespread, including appearances in England, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Texas, California, Minnesota, Canada and now, Serbia.
