| HIST | Frances Salley Schumpert | Visit Guest Book CHERAW - Mrs. Frances Salley Schumpert of 205 Powe Street, Cheraw, SC, died on Sunday, January 30, 2011. She was born May 13, 1910, in Aiken County, SC, and was the daughter of the late Rufus Cephas Salley and Daisy Riley Salley. She was the widow of Edward Stewart Schumpert, who died in 1993. She lived in Cheraw for most of her adult life, until moving to her daughter's home in Burlington, NC, in 2008. Mrs. Schumpert graduated from Winthrop College in 1932 with a B.A. degree in English and history and was president of her senior class. She taught in the public schools of Cheraw for 30 years and was named Chesterfield County's first Distinguished Teacher-Citizen. She also received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. In the spring of 2004, she was the recipient of the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award from the Winthrop University Alumni Association. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Cheraw. Through the years, she served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher for children and for adults, circle leader and delegate to annual conference. In 1964, she was the recipient of a life membership from the Women's Society of Christian Service. Survivors include two daughters, Salley S. Bradford and husband, Bill, of Burlingon, NC, and Susan S. Laney and husband, Richard, of Rocky Mount, NC. Surviving also are five grandchildren, Salley B. Wilson and husband, Bruce, of Elon, NC, Will Bradford of Burlington, NC, Steward Laney and wife, Sandy, of Charlotte, NC, Susan Laney of Greensboro, NC, and Matthew Laney of Raleigh, NC. The funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Cheraw on Thursday, February 3, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Old St. David's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 117 Third Street, Cheraw, SC 29520. Norton Funeral Home of Cheraw is serving the family of Mrs. Schumpert.
