VASSAR Geraldine (Kay) McKay Vassar, 77, wife of Melvin Eugene Vassar, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at National Health Care Center in Sumter after a lengthy illness. Born in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Vivian Galloway and Dudley McKay of Timmonsville. After a long career in Civil Service where she earned many meritorious service awards, she retired from Shaw AFB on June 14, 1999. Kay is survived by her husband of 58 years Melvin Eugene Vassar of Sumter; three daughters, Linda Christie-Horn of Denver, Colo., Nancy Vassar of Lexington, and Sharon Rumph and her husband, Mark, along with her beloved grandson Nicholas Rumph, of Greenville. She is also survived by three sisters; Julia Weatherly of Cartersville, Kathlyn Anderson of Timmonsville and Sondra Hayes of Florence. She was predeceased in death by a brother, Wayne Allen McKay, Timmonsville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made on Kay's behalf to the SPCA 1140 S. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 and Alzheimer's Association SC Chapter, 2999 Sunset Blvd. Suite # 102 W. Columbia, SC 29169.
