| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina Melvin Vassar Melvin Vassar, 83, widower of Geraldine “Kay” Vassar, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at The Gardens at Eastside in Greenville after a lengthy illness. Born in Anderson County, he was the son of the late John Preston “J.P.” Vassar and Willie Burnette Vassar. After a long career serving his country in the United States Air Force and a full second career with the U.S. Postal Service, he retired to enjoy his home and family. Melvin is survived by his daughters, Linda Christie-Horn (widow) of Denver, Colo., Nancy Vassar of Lexington, Sharon Rumph and husband, Mark, and a beloved grandson, Nicholas Rumph, all of Simpsonville. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Linda Faye and Laura Gail, and two brothers, Cecil and Bobby. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to all of the staff at The Gardens at Eastside for the compassion and care you provided to our father for the past five years.
