HARPER Jr. Arthur Lide Harper Jr., age 83, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, after a short illness at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Florence, he was the only child of the late Arthur Lide Harper and Rosa Jenkins Dowling Harper. He entered the College of Charleston as a pre-med student, but his studies were interrupted by service in the U.S. Army from 1944-46. He was honorably discharged as a medical laboratory technician, Company D, 322nd Medical Battalion in Japan and later graduated from the College of Charleston with a bachelor of science in chemistry and biology and a minor in psychology. He also attended the University of South Carolina Law School. In 1948, he married Amelia deSaussure Barnwell of Stateburg. He founded Broad Street Furniture Co. in Sumter in 1951 and thereafter Town & Country Dress Shop and Harper Real Estate, also in Sumter. Surviving him are his wife; three daughters, Amelia Elizabeth Harper Anderson and her husband, Richard K. Anderson Jr., Anne Jenkins Harper Lee and her husband, David L. Lee Jr., and Catherine Barnwell Harper Wallace; two sons, Arthur Lide Harper III and his wife, Betsy Boyle Harper, and Robert DuPre Harper and his wife, Marie DiNunzio Harper; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Family-only graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at Church of the Holy Cross, Stateburg, officiated by the Rev. Thomas Wynn Allen. Visitation will follow in the church parish house. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Cross Cemetery Fund or Preservation Fund, 335 N. The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements. 50 YEARS AGO - 1962 Sept. 15-21 The entire seven-member Arthur Harper family of Sumter was hospitalized after a collision with another car driving on the wrong side of the road occurred on Highway 521 about two miles south of Sumter, killing two of the occupants and injuring two others. The dead were identified as John F. Walker, 24, and John Herndon, both of James Island; injured were Albert Galloway, 28 and Joe Walker, 20, addresses unavailable. In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Harper, their injured children were Betty, 13, Anne, 11, Cathy, 9, Arthur Jr., 6, and Bobby, 5. According to S.C. Highway Patrolman R.K. Nettles, who investigated the accident, the Harpers were traveling south on Highway 521in their station wagon while the other car was headed north "at a high rate of speed" when the "terrific collision" occurred around dusk during clear road conditions.
