GLORIA H. LEWIS
Gloria Herlong Lewis, 82, a retired registered nurse, widow of John Benjamin Lewis Sr., passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, in Sumter.
Mrs. Lewis was born June 23, 1927, a daughter of the late William Pou Herlong and Varnie McLeod Herlong of Paxville. After graduating from the Columbia School of Nursing, Mrs. Lewis worked as a private duty nurse. After many years of private duty nursing, she was employed as a school nurse with Sumter County School District 2, from where she retired. Mrs. Lewis' reputation for excellence in the practice of nursing was well known by all of her patients and colleagues.
Surviving are two children, John "Rusty" Benjamin (Peggy) Lewis Jr. of Sumter and Denise Lewis (Stan) Stanley of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Brandon (Jill) Lewis, Dr. Susan Lewis (Dr. Brad) Easterly, Michael Lewis, Dr. Kelly Lewis, Lindsey Lewis (Michael) Burnside, Carson Stanley and Anna Stanley; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Varnie Herlong Rodwell of Charleston, Beverly Herlong (Roy) Nettles of Lake City, Katherine Herlong (Herman) Ard of Manning and Freddie Herlong (Dr. William) Crymes of Charleston; and a brother, Don Louis (Martha Brewer) Herlong of Manning.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Randolph Lewis; a sister, Farris Herlong Phillips; and a brother, William Pou Herlong Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Methodist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Robert Huggins officiating. Burial will follow in Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church prior to the services.
