HOOK Lewis Hodge Hook, 98, of Sumter, and more recently of Autumn Care of Drexel, N.C., died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Grace Hospital in Morganton, N.C. Born Aug. 22, 1911, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Newell Hook and Janie Hodge Hook. He was married to Clyde Kathryn Watt Hook for 64 years and was a longtime active member of Grace Baptist Church in Sumter. He was employed by B.L. Montague for 32 years. During World War II, he served as a civilian supervising the production of equipment used by the military. In recognition of this work, his wife had the honor of christening a naval ship at the Charleston Navy Yard in 1945. After retiring from Montague, he and his wife, Clyde, co-owned and operated Hook Cleaners. Mr. Hook was a Mason and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He enjoyed his family, fishing and gardening. Surviving are his daughter, Lucy Hook Folger (Marvin) of Morganton; five grandchildren, Stephen Lewis Folger (Connie) of Morganton, Luanne Folger Dickson (Blake) of Greensboro, N.C., John Rush Folger (Anya) of Wilmington, N.C., Kathryn Hook Smith (Ray) of West Columbia and Brandon Hook of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Becky Hook of Swansea; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clyde Watt Hook; infant son, Elwyn Jan Hook; son, William Newell Hook II; a brother, Fred Hook; and three sisters, Dorothy Booth, Nelle Harvin and Ethel Finley. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Jim Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W.
