Mrs. McCutchen is truly a remarkable person.” The Cross of Military Service, an outgrowth of the Southern Cross of Honor, is presented to veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict who are lineal blood descendants of Confederate military personnel. of Bishopville, South Carolina Naomi G. McCutchen BISHOPVILLE — Funeral services for Naomi Henrietta Griffin McCutchen will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bishopville Presbyterian Church. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hancock Elmore Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville. Mrs. McCutchen passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center. Mrs. McCutchen was born Feb. 21, 1916, in Paxville, a daughter of the late Naomi Geddings and Charles Lawrence Griffin. She was a member of the Greatest Generation, being born two years before World War I ended; a child during the Roaring ‘20s; a teen during the Great Depression; and a young adult coming of age during World War II, when she learned to value family, friends and faith. Mrs. McCutchen graduated as salutatorian of Pinewood High School in 1932 and was also the last surviving member of her class. She attended Tuomey School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse. She served as an Army nurse with the rank of second lieutenant during World War II. One of her most challenging assignments was as a nurse to German prisoners of war at Moore General Hospital in North Carolina. She went on to become director of nurses at Lee County Memorial Hospital in Bishopville. She retired from nursing in 1977. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gregg McCutchen Jr., of Bishopville, in 1961. They had three children, Elizabeth Simon (Billy) of Lugoff, William Gregg McCutchen III (Jenny) of Bishopville and Martha Gray (Ashby) of Lugoff. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Bo Simon (Suzanne), Belle Simon Branham, Rhetta Cloyd (Ed), Travis Pate (Michelle), Gregg McCutchen IV (Christie) and Lisa Klutz (Tom); and 12 great-grandchildren, Lindsey Simon, Wade Branham, Grace Branham, Haley Cloyd, Katie Cloyd, Holland Cloyd, Hampton Cloyd, Alyssa Pate, Noah Pate, Drew Martin, Jacob Klutz and Edward Klutz. She is also survived by her sister, Ruth Aycock of Sumter; sister-in-law, Naomay “Bunch’’ Griffin; nieces, Cissy Synder, Virginia Cox, Beatrice McCormick, Laura Morris, Libby Aycock and Lois Brown; and nephews, Charles Griffin, Calhoun Aycock, Don McLeod and Wade McLeod. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Charles Griffin, Graham Griffin and Rhinehart Griffin; a sister, Janette McLeod; a special first cousin, Gladys Evelyn Pridgen (Al) of Pinewood; two nephews, Rhinehart Griffin and Steve Griffin; and a niece, Bessie Cogburn. Mrs. McCutchen was active as a member of the Bishopville Presbyterian Church, Ladies Sunday School Class, Morning Circle, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was recognized on her 90th birthday by the Honorable Grady Brown with a certificate of merit from the South Carolina House of Representatives. Her family and friends will remember her as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated nurse. She was also devoted to her parents and grandparents and she dearly loved her brothers and sisters and their families. She believed in praying and the power of prayer. She began her morning reading her Bible, Daily Bread and studying her Sunday school lesson. The family would like to express special thanks to caregivers, Ruby Anderson, Melissa Simon and Ginny Bryant, and also recognizes Kershaw Health Hospice (Renda, Ruth, Megan and Chaplain Brian) for all their care and compassion, as well as medical service.
