MATT WALSH / THE SUMTER ITEM Posted: Sunday, July 6, 2014 12:00 am BY JADE REYNOLDS (803) 774-1250 More than a year ago, Carletha Addison had the idea to start a trolley service in Sumter. Since then, Sumter Trolley Tours LLC has been on a roll. "It has been an adventurous, enlightening and successful year for us," she said. "We've enjoyed all of our events. I think the weddings are the most fun for us. That's when our staff gets to adorn the trolley with bows, oriental carpets, silver trays and wreaths. We dress up in our finery and witness the beginning of a new life together for the young couples. ... It is an honor and privilege to be a part of this celebration." Her husband, Buster Addison, shares ownership of the business. Not too long ago, one of the couples they worked with were Will Witcher and the former Virginia Jones. "It was one of the best decisions we made," said Ginger Jones, the bride's mother. "Everybody was where they needed to be on time. It got rid of the hassle. It was a little easier and a lot more fun." The driver dressed up, and his wife served them beverages. The bride and groom had a white covered bench to sit on. They even had umbrellas in case it rained, she said. "A lot of our grandchildren were in the wedding, and they loved riding to the reception," Jones said. "It made for good photo opportunities, (too). It really did enhance the day. I would recommend it." But the company's bread and butter, so to speak, are the historical tours. "Our tours are typically five hours," Addison said. "We have an extended King's Highway and Dingle's Mill tour that lasts longer and are available upon request. Individual prices for these tours are $20. All tours require a 15-passenger occupancy. Our riders tell us that historical tours aboard the trolley are a great way to learn more about Sumter's history." Similarly, she hopes to add church tours to the repertoire. "There is interest in tours of Sumter's houses of worship," Addison said. "However, this event is still in the planning stage. We like the idea of including three houses of worship as well as three caterers for this event. Needless to say, we have learned that it is an interesting challenge to coordinate all these schedules, but one that we will overcome in the near future." They are always open to suggestions. "If readers have events that could be enhanced by our unique service, we invite them to contact us with their ideas," Addison said. "We know that Sumter Trolley Tours is an asset to our community as witnessed by our strong beginning. We are grateful to those who have encouraged and supported us in this venture and are committed to providing a quality to service to the citizens of Sumter."
