George Ferdinand Alsbrooks Sr., 91, husband of 72 years to Carrie Lee Burress Alsbrooks, was promoted to glory Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Manchester/Wedgefield, he was a son of the late David Wylie Alsbrooks and the late Susan Elizabeth McCall Alsbrooks. Mr. Alsbrooks was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. He was a member and former South Carolina grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. He was a member of the Sumter Kiwanis Club. He played on the first American Legion P-15 baseball team in 1929. He served in both the State National Guard and also in the National Guard and was a former commander of the Sumter Unit of the State National Guard. He was an avid fisherman. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a son, Ferdie Alsbrooks and wife, Jule, of Madison, Ga.; a daughter, Frances Watson of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Julie A. Craddock, Pat Watson, Tripp Alsbrooks, Mike Watson, Lynn A. McDonald, Donna Watson, Susan Elizabeth Alsbrooks; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be current and former deacons of Alice Drive Baptist Church, members of the Kiwanis Club and Dr. Hugh Stoddard. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
