NEWMAN Frances Elizabeth Pollard Newman, 98, widow of Lonnie Cullen Newman Sr., was promoted to glory with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008. She was born in Fitzgerald, Ga., on Oct. 4, 1910, a daughter of the late William Frederick and Hester Weaver Pollard. She was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she was the pianist for many years, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was retired from the National Bank of South Carolina and a member and past worthy matron of Beauclare Chapter No. 20 Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include two sons, Lonnie Cullen Newman Jr. and wife, Mary, of Orlando, Fla., and William Allen "Al" Newman and wife, Lucia, of Sumter; four grandchildren, Pamela Newman Hitchcock and Heather Newman Kuhl and husband, Daniel, both of Orlando, Matthew Adam Newman and wife, Lisa, of Sumter and Lorianna Newman Preston and husband, Thomas, of Wilmington, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Alex and Kevin Hitchcock and Lauren Newman; several nephews; a niece; and two especially devoted friends, Kathleen Mallard and Ann Papp. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Ralph Pollard and Elmer Eugene Pollard, and two sisters, Esther Pollard Elliott and Gladys Pollard Wilson. The celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, officiated by the Rev. Jerry Pickens of Aldersgate and the Revs. Ron Bower and Billy Roe of the First Church of God. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Doug Griffin, Leslie "Hap" Griffin Jr., Alex Hitchcock, Marion Baker, Billy Simpson, Warren Corbett, Calvin Boykin and David Givens. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Asbury-Rogers Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, 10 Alice Drive. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God Television Ministry, 1835 S.C. 521 N., Sumter, SC 29153; Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150; or to a charity of one's choice.
