| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina GUSSIE K. SLOCUM Gussie Kinney Slocum, 97, widow of Lloyd Searle Slocum, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John Edward "Ned" and Judith Brunson Kinney. Mrs. Slocum was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, where she was active with the youth department. She retired from AT&T as a long distance chief operator in Walterboro, where she met and married Mr. Slocum of New Hampshire. She retired to Sumter in the early 1960s. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Kinney Reynolds of Sumter; nine nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Breeden, Ethel Kinney and Margie Kinney; and three brothers, Wilbur Kinney, Julius B. Kinney and Thomas J. Kinney. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Jock Hendricks and Pastor Phil Ross officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
