SMITH Sr. Alton Owen "Smitty" Smith Sr., 87, widower of Maria Brogdon Smith, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at a local nursing facility. Born Oct. 18, 1920, in Grifton, N.C., he was a son of the late Eddie Arthur Smith and the late Mattie Holloway Smith. Mr. Smith was the district accounting manager for Carolina Power and Light Co. when he retired after working there for 43 years. He was an active member of Graham Baptist Church for many years before moving to Concord Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. As a charter member of the Sumter Optimist Club, he was a past president and chosen as "Optimist of the Year." Mr. Smith served as past president of the Pioneer Club of CP&L. He loved his career, his church families, his gardening and his involvement in the community, but above all he loved his Lord and his family, which showed through his actions and his wonderful smile. Surviving are his son, Alton Owen Smith Jr. and wife, Kelli, of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Rebecca "Becky" S. Wilson and husband, William H. "Rusty" Wilson III, of Mayesville and Lisa S. Peden and husband, John T.S. "Johnny" Peden III, of Cameron; eight grandchildren, Maria W. Hine and husband, John, Rebecca W. Hagerla and husband, Kelby, Heath Wilson, Hannah Peden, Katie Peden, Patrick Smith, Tristan Smith and Ashton Smith; a great-granddaughter, Haley Hagerla; and three sisters-in-law, Ida S. Smith of Grifton, Evelyne N. Brogdon and Joan W. Brogdon, both of Mount Pleasant. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, L. Roy Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brian Peake and Dr. William H. "Rusty" Wilson III officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandson Heath Wilson, C.W. Brunson, Mike Brogdon, Jeff Brogdon, Jeff Davis and Edward Brunson. The family will receive friends at the home, Johanna.
